If you've watched television or read the newspaper lately, then, you've seen destruction in full scale. From earthquakes to flooding, mudslides to massive amounts of snow fall, airplane crashes to shootings, motor vehicle crashes, and numerous other emergencies that are affecting our world. Who, you might wander, are the people who respond and take care of these situations?
When a pager goes off; meals are interrupted, housework is stopped, jobs are put on hold. Men and women, everywhere, run to grab needed clothing and equipment. Ambulances, firetrucks, police cars are started and enroute. Hearts are pumping, sweat glands are working overtime, respirations are increasing, and pupils are dilated. Bodies are on overdrive. These men and women are called on at all hours of the day, seven days a week. Facing many obstacles, dangers, and conditions; they rush forth without question into situations unknown. Yet, they do so with a sense of pride, engaging in an adventure, an excitement to help others, and compassion for those affected. From paid to volunteer personnel; hours, sometimes days, are spent trying to save the lives of others, searching for survivors, calming family/bystanders, and protecting our communities/states/countries.
From Mass Casualty Incidents to community disasters, large scale to small scale; at a moments notice, lives are changed. Families are devastated by losses. Companies are scrambling to account for employees that are missing. Nations are put on lock down. Agencies are contacted for assistance to provide shelter, food/drinks, clothing, and counseling. And, again, we ask; "Who are these people who rush to the aid of those in need?"
At a moments notice, leaving family at home, work incomplete, phones unanswered, and meals forgotten....We are the men and women of your community, names unheard of, strangers in the midst. We are parents, brothers, sisters, and grandparents. As, school teachers, high school students, law enforcement officers, and fellow church members we volunteer to serve for the betterment of our communities. We drive school buses, operate heavy machinery, and farm. Our jobs are menial tasks when compared to the needs of those lives affected by disasters, large or small.
